Işıl Güleçyüz
Born in Gaziantep, she traveled extensively across Anatolia due to her father’s work, spending her childhood becoming acutely aware of cultural differences. She moved to Istanbul for her university education and graduated from the Business Faculty of Boğaziçi University. She began her painting practice with foundational training at İstasyon Art Academy, working with Argun Okumuşoğlu and Hülya Düzenli. She later joined Resul Aytemür’s studio at Beyoğlu Akademililer Art Center, where she continued her work for many years. The artist has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Türkiye and abroad, and has held three solo exhibitions in Istanbul. She continues to live and work in Istanbul.
In addition to her traditional works on canvas, she employs materials such as wood, metal, and fabric, and produces experimental works using handmade papers and old photographs. Deeply inspired by the city she lives in, her practice revolves around individual and collective memory, urban transformation, and the visibility of women in society. She summarizes her relationship with painting as follows: “Unlike the roles I willingly play or those imposed on me in this world, painting is something I do solely for myself — a state of being alone with who I am. When I paint, I am no longer a mother, a spouse, a child, a sister, nor any other role.”
